Description

The Enterprise visits a planet whose sun is about to supernova in order to rescue its inhabitants, who have already saved themselves by escaping into their own past.

Personal Rating

I love the concept of this episode, that one can choose from a library full of “destinations” in the past to visit, by means of the atavachron machine.

The epochs that the Enterprise crew visit are appealing to me: an ancient ice age and a city that perhaps resembles 17th century London.

I admire the determination of Mr. Atoz and all his replicas to “rescue” Kirk and his crew by sending them into the past. Mr. Atoz also plays Septimus in Bread and Circuses.

I like the way they recycle props in Star Trek. For instance, in this episode the "atavachron," which sends people into the past appears to be Gary Seven’s computer from Assignment: Earth.

Favorite Quotations

Kirk, after he and his crew get separated into different epochs: “Spock, are you in the library?”

Spock: “Indeed not. We're in a wilderness of arctic characteristics.”

Bones: “He means it's cold.”

Spock: “Zarabeth, will you show me where the time portal is?”

Zarabeth: “But your friend — he is ill.”

Spock: “That is true. If I leave him, he may never regain the ship. He would then be marooned in this time period. But he is no longer in danger of death, so my primary duty to him has been discharged, And if I remain here, no one of our party would be able to aid Captain Kirk.”

Zarabeth, sighing: “Oh, you make it sound like an equation.”

Spock: “It should be an equation! I should be able to resolve this problem logically.”

Zarabeth, referring to the man who sent her into exile: “A very inventive mind, that man.”

Spock: “But insensitive. To send such a beautiful woman into exile.”

Spock, perplexed by his emotional expression: “The cold must have affected me more than I realized. Please pay no attention. I'm not myself.”
